UN and the Global Compact on Migration

The GFMD Business Mechanism was invited to attend the UN Summit on refugees and migrants in September 2016. At this summit, UN member states committed to the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which launched a process of intergovernmental negotiations that will result in the adoption of a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration (GCM) in 2018. As part of the consultation process for the GCM, the UN has developed six thematic sessions, along with regional consultations that are well underway. These sessions seek to include a wide range of stakeholders and address various topics that are pertinent to global migration management.

Within the UN framework, the Business Mechanism pushes for strengthening public-private dialogue to rethink labour migration policies and international skills mobility for a successful GCM. To learn more about the UN and the GCM, see the links below.
